Barometric Pressure Migraine App: When the Reading Is Taken
A barometric pressure migraine app is decided by one thing: whether it stamps the pressure change as you log, or looks the weather up afterwards.

Every app in this category will show you a pressure figure. The one that matters is when it took the reading, because that decides what the number is measuring, and two of the three common answers measure something close to useless.
This is the single field where app choice genuinely changes what you end up with. Everything else in a migraine diary survives being written down that evening from memory, or on paper, or in a notes app. Pressure is the one that quietly degrades when you leave it until later.
Three ways an app gets the number, and only one is a measurement
Stamped as you log. The app takes the pressure change for your area at the moment you record the attack and stores it on that entry. The reading is fixed to the event.
Looked up afterwards. The app keeps a date or a timestamp, and later fetches historical weather for it — sometimes hour by hour, often as a daily figure for a whole region.
Remembered. You write “muggy” or “storm coming” from what you recall of the sky.
The third is not data, and it is worse than a blank field because it looks like data. What you are recording is your belief about the weather, formed after the attack, by someone who by then already suspects weather is involved.
The interesting one is the second, because whether it is rigorous or worthless depends entirely on details the app never shows you.
Where the retrospective lookup loses the signal
The effect with any support in the research is not high pressure or low pressure. It is a fall of a certain size over a period of hours. The one quantified threshold in the literature comes from a year-long diary study, and it is a drop of more than about 5 hPa — a change, over time, not a level.
Hourly weather archives exist, and a lookup that uses one can reconstruct that fall perfectly well after the fact. So the honest version of the argument is not that retrospective weather is fake. It is that a lookup can only be as good as two things it has no control over: the resolution of the figure it fetches, and the precision of the time and place you gave it.
Daily aggregates flatten the fall. Take a day where pressure sat at 1014 through the morning, fell hard through the afternoon, and bottomed out at 1004 by evening. The daily mean for that date is somewhere near 1009 — an unremarkable number resembling most other days in the record. The fall is the entire signal, and the daily average is what is left after you remove it. Worse, an attack starting at 6pm on the steep part of that fall and one starting at 8am before it began get the identical figure attached, because they share a calendar date. The column looks perfectly respectable while carrying nothing.
The lookup inherits your timestamp. This is the part no weather API can fix. Hourly data has nothing to align to if the entry it is aligning to says only “Tuesday” — and entries say only Tuesday all the time, because people log the attack once it is over. Location works the same way: a figure fetched for where your phone is now, rather than where you were when it started, is a reading from somewhere else.
That is why the moment of capture is not a detail. A stamp taken as you log pins the reading to a real start time and a real location, at the moment both are still known, rather than to a reconstruction of them made days later.
Check that it records the change, not the level
Some apps do stamp at log time and still store the wrong thing: today’s pressure, in hectopascals, with nothing to compare it to.
A reading of 1008 tells you nothing by itself. It is only meaningful against where pressure was yesterday, and the field you want on the entry is the change over the preceding 24 hours — a signed number, negative for falling. If an app shows a bare pressure value with no delta, it has captured a variable that is not the one the research is about.
The second thing to check is what it does when there is no reading. On a day with no forecast data — no signal, location off, a service outage — the honest behaviour is to leave the field empty. Writing a zero instead is a real failure mode, and a subtle one: zero means “pressure did not change”, which is a specific and usually false claim, and a run of false zeros will dilute any pattern in the rest of the record toward nothing. My own app shipped that bug and stamped zeros for two releases before it was caught, so this is not a hypothetical distinction between blank and zero. It is the one I would ask about.
Whether any of this applies to you
It may well not, and three months of recording is how you find out.
Weather sensitivity is a subgroup rather than a universal. In the diary study behind that 5 hPa figure, weather change was associated with attacks in roughly two-thirds of participants — which means about a third had no pressure response at all. Why the pressure studies disagree with each other goes through what that does to the published research, and it is worth reading before you decide what weight to put on the column.
Two things worth carrying into your own record. Where an effect shows up, it tends to be on how often attacks come rather than how bad they are; the studies looking at severity contradict each other outright. And the population answer and your answer are different questions. Fourteen studies averaging thousands of people cannot tell you what your own record can, which is the argument for the column existing at all.
Give it three months before concluding anything, and apply the same caution you would to any suspected trigger — several of the things people log as triggers are the attack already starting, and pressure is unusual mainly in that it cannot be one of those, since the weather is not something your prodrome caused.
What to do if you are tracking on paper
Keep tracking on paper. It is faster during a bad week and the habit matters more than the field.
Then accept that this one column is the thing a printed diary cannot fill in, and decide whether that is worth an app to you. If weather is not among your suspicions, it is not. The printable diary covers everything else a clinician asks for and requires no phone at all.
